  • Shadowboxes

What is a shadow box picture frame?

A shadow box picture frame differs from a standard picture frame in its deeper interior depth, which accommodates more dimensional art than traditional flat artwork. The recessed interior creates an enclosed display case for memorabilia, keepsakes, flags, multi-layered art or other three-dimensional objects all in a finished picture frame.

What are the most common uses for a shadow box picture frame?

The most common uses for shadow boxes are memorabilia and keepsakes like medals, coins, jewelry, wedding items (such as invitations, garters, pressed flowers, name cards) or baby shoes. Many people often use shadow box picture frames for military flag displays paired with medals, ribbons, photos which are often used in retirement or memorial displays. Sports enthusiasts love using a shadow box frame to display jerseys, ticket stubs, lanyards and keychains together for their teams. Additionally, shadow box frames can be used to display collections of items like shells, rocks, pins, patches, matchboxes. From an artistic perspective shadow box frames can be used to display multi-layered art which require additional depth to add visual interest. The uses for shadow box frames are endless and your creativity is the only limit!

What types of shadow box frames are sold?

We carry two different series of shadow boxes: Elite and Showcase. Our Elite series comes in four different colors and has a usable interior depth of 7/8”. While our Showcase series has three different color options with an interior depth of 1”. Both frames are available in standard size frames with our most popular size being our 11”x14” picture frame and the 16” x 20” picture frame sizes.

How do I choose the appropriate size shadow box frame?

We recommend laying out and arranging your items as you would want them to be placed in your shadow box frame. The process of arranging and rearranging can give you an idea of how much space you will want in your frame and what size to order. Also important is making sure your item depth is within the stated range of our collections (for Elite 7/8” and for Showcase 1”).  Once you’ve laid out your items for framing and measured, the final step is selecting a frame color that either complements your pieces or contrasts with them to add visual interest to the hanging space.

    Other Specialty Frames

At FrameUSA we offer some other specialty frames that can be used to frame a number of different items. Our Frame-A-Tee series offers a unique way to showcase jerseys or tee shirts and our Frame An Album is designed specifically for displaying record album covers. • Thin Picture Frames

Thin Picture Frames: Sleek, Minimalist Framing for Modern Spaces

Thin picture frames — sometimes called slim or narrow frames — are defined by their profile width, typically under one inch. The narrow molding sits quietly at the edge of your image, providing just enough structure to give your photo, print, or artwork a clean, finished look without competing for attention. If the art is the star, a thin frame is the perfect supporting role.

Why Choose a Thin Picture Frame?

Thin frames are a natural fit for modern and contemporary interiors. Their restrained profile pairs beautifully with minimalist décor, clean-lined furniture, and gallery-style wall arrangements. Because the frame itself takes up so little visual space, thin frames are especially effective when hanging multiple pieces together — the images flow naturally from one to the next without bulky borders breaking up the composition.

Thin frames are also a go-to choice for photography. Whether you're displaying black-and-white portraits, landscape prints, or documentary-style work, a slim frame keeps the focus where it belongs: on the image itself. They work equally well in professional settings like studios, offices, and commercial spaces, where a polished but understated look is the goal.

    Materials and Finishes

Thin picture frames are available in a range of materials to suit different aesthetics. Metal thin frames — particularly in matte black, brushed silver, and gold — are among the most popular choices for a clean, gallery-worthy look. Wood thin frames in natural, walnut, white, and black offer warmth and texture while maintaining that same slim silhouette. If you're drawn to a floating or borderless aesthetic, some thin frame styles include a rabbet deep enough to give your artwork a subtle shadow gap effect.

    Pairing Thin Frames with Mats

One consideration with thin frames: because the molding is so narrow, the mat (if you choose to use one) becomes a significant visual element. A wide mat inside a thin frame creates an elegant, airy presentation — the white or off-white mat provides breathing room around the image, and the thin frame acts as a precise, clean border around the mat. This combination is a classic approach used in fine art galleries and is just as effective at home. Design your own custom mat by using our custom shop.

Common Uses for Thin Picture Frames

Thin frames are a versatile choice across a wide range of applications — from framing family photos and travel prints to displaying botanical illustrations, architectural drawings, and fine art reproductions. They're especially popular for grid gallery walls, where a consistent thin frame across multiple pieces creates a unified, curated look. Available in all standard photo and print sizes, as well as custom dimensions, thin frames are one of the most flexible options in our collection.
