Large Picture Frames for Less

Large Picture Frames for Less

Big posters deserve better than thumbtacks, and framing one doesn't have to cost a fortune. Every frame on this page comes in a standard large size, ready to hang: 24x36 frames under $60, and 27x40 and 27x41 frames under $85. Find your size, pick a look, and get that concert or movie poster on the wall.

Start by Measuring Your Poster

Measure the poster itself, not the frame you think you need. Most large posters land in one of three sizes:

  • 24x36: the most common large poster size, used for concert posters, art prints, and plenty more.
  • 27x40: the standard size for US movie posters from the mid-1980s on.
  • 27x41: the size US movie posters were printed in until about the mid-1980s. If you're framing a vintage one, measure it. It's probably this size.

27x41 is the largest available standard size that we make. Need something bigger? Our Custom Shop can build frames up to 30x40. Not sure which size you have? Our large picture frame size guide walks through it.

What Comes With Your Frame

Every frame here comes with clear styrene and a cardboard backing. Styrene is a lightweight plastic glazing used in place of glass, and at large sizes that matters. It's much lighter than glass and far less likely to shatter, which makes a big frame easier to hang and a safer choice for a dorm, a kid's room, or a busy hallway.

Want a mat or to upgrade to Acrylic glazing? Our Custom Shop can build that for you.

How to Make an Inexpensive Frame Look Great

At this size, the frame is a big part of the look, so it's worth a minute of thought:

  • Black is the most popular choice for posters, and for good reason. It frames bold artwork cleanly and lets the colors stand out.
  • Silver gives concert posters and modern prints a sharp, high-contrast edge.
  • White keeps things light and works well with minimal or pastel artwork.
  • Wood tones add warmth, especially to vintage movie posters.

A narrow frame keeps the focus on the poster and helps keep the price down. A big poster already makes a statement; the frame just needs to finish it.

Large Frame Questions

What size frame do i need for a movie poster?

Most US movie posters printed since the mid-1980s are 27x40 inches, so they need a 27x40 frame. Vintage US movie posters printed before then are usually 27x41 inches. Measure the poster before you buy, since a frame needs to match the poster's exact size for a clean fit.

What's the cheapest way to frame a large poster?

The cheapest way to frame a large poster is to buy a ready-made frame in the poster's exact size, such as 24x36, 27x40, or 27x41. The poster drops right in, with no trimming or matting needed. At Frame USA, the Budget Saver and Simply Poly poster frames are the lowest-priced large options.

Will a 27x40 poster fit in a 27x41 frame?

A 27x40 poster will fit inside a 27x41 frame, but it leaves about an inch of extra space, so the poster can slip and a gap may show. For the cleanest look, use a frame that matches the poster's exact size, or add a mat to fill the difference.

Is styrene as clear as glass?

Yes. Styrene is just as clear as glass, and it's much lighter and far less likely to shatter, which makes it practical for large frames. It can scratch, so clean it with a soft, dry cloth rather than glass cleaner. For a sturdier option, Frame USA's Custom Shop offers thicker acrylic glazing, which is still lighter than glass.

What is the largest picture frame size Frame USA offers?

Frame USA's largest standard frame size is 27x41 inches. Frame USA's Custom Shop can build frames up to 30x40 inches.

How do you hang a large picture frame?

Frame USA frames come with screw-in sawtooth hangers, so a large frame can hang on a sturdy nail or picture hook. Rest the sawtooth on the nail and shift the frame left or right along the teeth until it's level.
For extra stability, add a second sawtooth hanger and use two nails at the same height. If you'd rather hang it on wire, Frame USA sells wire hanging kits for wood and poly frames. If you can't hit a stud, use a picture hook or wall anchor rated for the frame's weight.
